Canada Greener Homes: the loan is closed, and so is the grant — what's left in 2026?
Last status check: October 8, 2026, based on the official pages of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).
Short answer: no, you can no longer submit a new application to the Canada Greener Homes Initiative. The grant stopped accepting new applications in February 2024, and the deadline to submit documents for existing files was December 31, 2025.
Visit interest-free loan of $5,000 to $40,000 closed to new applications on October 1, 2025. Its funding is now fully committed.
An important nuance: if your loan has already been approved, that funding remains available. And in Quebec, other programs have picked up part of the slack, with their own rules.
Before planning your work, take stock of your actual financing: what you already have, and what is still open.
Canada Greener Homes in 2026: what is actually closed?
The two components have almost identical names, which creates a lot of confusion. Here is the official timeline:
| Date | What happened |
| May 2021 | Launch of the Canada Greener Homes Grant |
| February 2024 | End of new grant applications |
| October 1, 2025 | Last day to apply for the Canada Greener Homes Loan |
| December 31, 2025 | Deadline to submit documents for existing grant files |
| 2026 | The loan is closed; only previously approved loans remain usable |
The Canada Greener Homes Grant is closed to new applications
The grant offered up to $5,000 for energy-efficient renovations, plus up to $600 for EnerGuide evaluations. Applications were accepted from May 2021 to February 2024.
Participants already enrolled had until December 31, 2025 to submit their documents. Applications received on time continue to be processed, but it is impossible to open a new file in 2026.
Is the interest-free loan still available?
Not for a new application. The Canada Greener Homes Loan, administered by the CMHC, offered:
- from $5,000 to $40,000;
- 0% interest, repayable over 10 years;
- an unsecured personal loan, subject to credit approval.
The last day to apply was October 1, 2025. According to NRCan, funding is now fully committed and no new applications can be approved.
«Active» does not mean «open to new applications»
Approved loan ≠ new loan available. If your loan was approved before the closure, your funding remains available. If you had not applied before October 1, 2025, there is no longer a Greener Homes loan available to you.
Why do we still see information saying the Greener Homes loan is active?
Because many web pages were written in 2024 or early 2025, when the grant was closed but the loan was still open. At the time, «the loan is still offered» was true.
That is no longer the case. And some pages still refer to the loan as «active» because thousands of homeowners are repaying or using an already approved loan. The program is still alive for them, not for new applicants.
Our advice: rely on the official NRCan page, and always check the update date of an article.
The case of homeowners whose loan has already been approved
NRCan is clear: the closure does not affect homeowners who already have an approved loan. They can continue their work and their funding requests.
Do not assume, however, that everything will happen on its own. Check the conditions of your file directly in the loan portal, and only deal with official channels. CMHC never asks applicants for a deposit.
What should I do if my loan is approved but my work has not started?
Here is the process to follow:
- Check the status of your file in the loan portal and note any deadline found there.
- Check the disbursement conditions. Up to 15% of the loan can be paid in advance if the contractor requires a deposit. The balance is paid after the work and the post-renovation evaluation.
- Confirm the eligible work. Only the work recommended in your pre-renovation evaluation and included in your application is funded.
- Keep quotes, invoices and documents. You will need to upload all final invoices to request disbursement.
- Do not change your project without validation. Work cannot be added after approval. If you remove some, the amount decreases, and it must remain at least $5,000.
Also note: if your final costs exceed the estimate, the loan does not increase. You pay the difference.
In Quebec, EnerGuide evaluations often went through Rénoclimat. Since October 1, 2026, this program has changed, and its former process ends on March 31, 2027. If your pre-work evaluation was done under this framework, quickly find out how to obtain your post-work evaluation.

What the program actually funded in Canada
To understand why it is still being talked about, you need to see the scale of the program. These figures describe a completed program, not assistance that is still accessible.
More than 400,000 households completed their renovations
According to NRCan's report as of February 2026:
- 406,334 households completed their renovations and received a grant;
- $1.8 G in grants were paid out;
- the average grant was 4 436 $ per household;
- on average, a participating household saves $386 per year in energy and avoids 92 tonnes of GHG.
The loan was used by approximately 120,000 households across the country, according to the CBC.
The most popular work
| Renovation | Number (February 2026) |
| Heat pumps | 229 000 |
| Windows and doors | 145 817 |
| Insulation | 74 207 |
| Air sealing | 72 115 |
| Solar panels | 38 500 |
Six out of ten homeowners chose to install a heat pump. These are precisely the types of work that Quebec programs continue to target.
The myths about Canada Greener Homes to avoid in 2026
| Myth | Reality | What you need to do |
| «I can still apply for the $5,000 grant» | Closed to new applications since February 2024 | Look at Quebec programs |
| «The $40,000 loan is still available» | Closed to new applications since October 1, 2025 | If your loan is approved, check your file |
| «The loan reimburses the EnerGuide evaluation» | No: the evaluation is at the homeowner's expense | Budget for the evaluation separately |
| «Any energy renovation is eligible» | Only the work recommended in the evaluation was eligible | Re-read your EnerGuide report |
| «LogisVert replaces Greener Homes exactly» | Different program, different criteria and amounts | Check each program separately |
«I can still apply for the $5,000 grant»
False. No new applications have been accepted since February 2024, and the deadline for existing files has passed.
«The $40,000 loan is still available»
False for a new application. Only loans approved before the closure remain usable.
«The loan reimburses the EnerGuide evaluation»
False. NRCan specifies that the cost of the evaluation is the homeowner's responsibility. It was the grant, not the loan, that reimbursed up to $600 for evaluations.
«Any energy renovation is automatically eligible»
False. The program was based on the EnerGuide evaluation: only the work recommended by the advisor, and included in the application, was eligible.
«LogisVert replaces Greener Homes exactly»
False. LogisVert is a Hydro-Québec program, with its own measures, its own calculation and no loan component.
What to do in Quebec after the closure of Greener Homes?
Good news: in Quebec, there are still active programs. Bad news: none is a copy of Greener Homes. You have to look at them one by one.
Hydro-Québec's LogisVert: an option for Quebec homeowners
LogisVert provides grants for certain measures, especially heat pumps. For an ENERGY STAR heat pump, the assistance is $50 per 1,000 BTU/h at –8 °C, or $120 if the model is cold-climate certified, with a displayed maximum of $6,700.
The calculation, criteria and documents are specific to LogisVert. In particular, the home must be heated mainly by electricity, and the device must appear on Hydro-Québec's list.
Rénoclimat and other Quebec programs
Rénoclimat, a Government of Quebec program managed by the Ministry of the Environment (MELCCFP), changed on October 1, 2026. The Energy Efficiency component can reach $21,500 for a house, for insulation, windows and other measures.
A new Adaptation component also funds flood protection. Amounts and criteria are changing: check current eligibility on Québec.ca before budgeting.
Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program in Quebec
The federal government replaced the universal approach with a targeted program: the Canada Greener Affordable Homes Program. It offers free renovations to low- and moderate-income households, through the provinces.
In Quebec, on June 29, 2026, Ottawa, Quebec and Hydro-Québec announced an envelope of approximately $243.5 million ($172.5 million from the federal government, plus $71 million from Hydro-Québec and Quebec). It aims first to install a free heat pump in approximately 20,000 modest-income households, through the Éconologis program.
Note: after a surge in applications, registrations for the 2026-2027 season are closed. No resumption date has been announced.

How to plan an energy renovation without a federal grant?
Without the 0% loan, planning matters more than ever. The goal: spend first where the impact is greatest.
Start with priority work
In general, you start with the building envelope: insulation, air sealing, windows. A house that leaks wastes some of its heat, regardless of the heating system.
Next come the heat pump and interior work. An energy evaluation, even optional under the new Rénoclimat, helps establish this order.
Calculate the net cost rather than the grant amount
The method is simple:
Cost of work → eligible assistance → available financing → net cost → potential savings
Illustrative example: a project to insulate exterior walls and install a wall-mounted heat pump costs $30,000.
- Rénoclimat assistance for walls, if the maximum applies: up to $7,000
- LogisVert assistance for a cold-climate heat pump of 15,000 BTU/h at –8 °C: $1,800
- Estimated net cost: approximately $21,200, before personal financing
This calculation is not a guarantee. Actual amounts depend on the eligibility of each measure.
Coordinating multiple jobs within a single project
Insulation, windows, heat pump, interior finishing: each trade has its moment. Poorly coordinated, these jobs interfere with each other, and you pay twice for the same finishing.
A turnkey renovation project makes it possible to plan the sequence, coordinate the trades and keep a single person responsible for the site.

Montreal and the South Shore: why planning matters particularly
The Greater Montreal housing stock is old. Century-old plexes in Montreal, post-war bungalows in Longueuil and Montérégie, houses from the 60s to 80s in Laval: each has its weaknesses.
The realities of older Quebec homes
The same problems are often found: insufficient original insulation, windows at the end of their life, damp basements and poorly insulated foundations.
Add to that our winters, with freeze-thaw cycles that wear down the building envelope, and a Hydro-Québec bill that climbs in January.
Why grouping jobs together can simplify the site
Grouping jobs together makes it possible to follow the right order: you insulate before finishing the walls, you run the heat pump lines before painting.
It reduces the number of interventions in the home, and the whole remains coherent, both aesthetically and functionally. For basements, our service of basement renovation integrates foundation insulation from the design stage.
In Montreal, in Longueuil or on the South Shore, plan your work before signing a quote: request an estimate for your project.

FAQ — Canada Greener Homes and renovation in Quebec
Is the Canada Greener Homes grant still available in 2026?
No. It has no longer accepted new applications since February 2024, and the deadline to submit documents for existing files was December 31, 2025.
Is the $40,000 Canada Greener Homes loan still open?
No. The last day to apply was October 1, 2025, and funding is now fully committed.
What should I do if my Greener Homes loan has already been approved?
Your financing remains available. Check your file in the loan portal, carry out only the work included in your application, then have your post-renovation evaluation done before requesting the final disbursement.
Can I still apply for a grant for a heat pump?
Not with Greener Homes. In Quebec, Hydro-Québec's LogisVert offers from $50 to $120 per 1,000 BTU/h at –8 °C, depending on the certification, for an eligible unit.
What is the difference between Greener Homes, LogisVert and Rénoclimat?
Greener Homes was a federal program, now closed. LogisVert is a Hydro-Québec program, focused on equipment such as the heat pump. Rénoclimat is a Government of Quebec program for insulation, windows and flood adaptation.
Is the Greener Homes Affordability program available in Quebec?
It was launched in Quebec in June 2026 for modest-income households, by Éconologis. Registration for 2026-2027 is however closed.
Are EnerGuide evaluations still required for the new programs?
Not always. In the new Rénoclimat, the evaluation is optional, but recommended and subsidized up to $500. LogisVert does not require it for a heat pump.
Can you combine several financial assistance programs for a renovation?
Yes, for different measures. But you cannot receive two subsidies for the same equipment or the same work, and certain top-ups cannot be combined.
How to finance an energy renovation after Greener Homes?
Calculate the net cost of your project by taking into account eligible Quebec assistance. The balance is then financed through your own means, your financial institution or, if you are eligible, a targeted program.
Homeowner in Longueuil, Montreal or on the South Shore?
Greener Homes is over, but your work is still necessary. With good planning and the right Quebec assistance, a well-structured project remains within your reach.
